MY STORY
Born and Raised in Revelstoke, British Columbia.
One of my main regrets in high school was not taking photography classes. I decided to take “useful” classes like home economics, woodworking, and shop class instead. I was into the stuff that a small town kid would be into: mountain biking, baseball, snowmobiling, video games, taking photos with my friends at party’s and The Simpsons. Something that you may find surprising is that I was never really into skiing or snowboarding. I did it occasionally but was not very good (I was very clumsy growing up) and wasn’t something I LOVED to do.
One of my first cameras (that I remember) was an Olympus digital point and shoot which was strictly used for taking photos at party’s and group photos with my friends. It would be awhile before I developed any artistic flair with my photography.
After graduating high school, I got into the family business, completed a electrical apprenticeship in 2009, and became a Journeyman Red Seal Electrician. I eventually made the transition to construction management working for a certain British Columbia power authority in 2013 and would do that at a few different places until late 2017 when I made the decision, which probably seemed crazy to many, to quit my job and go to university.
From 2018 to 2023 I attended the University of Calgary to prove something to myself.
This is the period in my life where I kind of rediscovered photography and everything that it could be. I spent way too much money on cameras - both digital and film, and learned how to take a good (objectively) photograph. I am very much self taught through the internet and my friend Mitch - who I would ask a LOT of questions about taking photos. My degree of choice allowed me to take a lot of courses of interest in both photography and film (movies), allowing me to refine my photography and attempt to find a unique style.
Some say that you need to have an “eye” for photography, but its very much a taught and honed skill that takes a lot of practice, and it’s kind of hard tbh.
In April 2023 (who even remembers 2020 to 2022) I graduated from the UofC with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication Media Studies with a minor in East Asian Studies. I had to learn some Japanese (which is really hard). Let me show you:
わたしはかっこいいですよ。 - That means “I am cool!”
I would describe my photography as movie like. I am always hunting for images that look like scenes out of a movie.
Additionally, my general philosophy when it comes to photography is color and contrast - I love ‘punchy’ images. I love telling stories with my photographs, however that may be. Being afforded the opportunity to take meaningful images for people is the greatest reward as a photographer and artist.
Now, living in Salmon Arm, British Columbia, I continue to work on photography, refine my art, hunt for those eye catching images, and build a community of people, brands, and other creatives in my pursuit of art.
